Last Thursday, March 17th, the Cultivating Roots Garden officially opened for the 2016 growing season! It was a fun evening filled with potato planting, a treasure hunt in our clover beds, and a raffle. Residents of Pacific Court and local community members celebrated St. Patrick's Day and honored the age old tradition of planting potatoes by filling one of our raised beds with Yellow Finnish Potatoes.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to all our garden partners including 8th Street Ale House/Galway Bay for providing soup samples, Lubbe Farms of Montesanto for donating seed potatoes, the Public Health staff here at the Health Department, and Karen Russo, Master Gardener/Irish Club representative whose contributions allowed the event to be a huge success!
Fueled by the high energy following the opening event, the first garden work day held Tuesday March 22 was a productive evening in the garden as well. 11 garden volunteers joined garden staff for weeding, bed prep, and harvesting of plants that have survived the wet winter. Volunteers left with kale, big smiles, and a few dirty hands.
Future Garden Work Days will occur every Tuesday throughout the season and begin at 3 PM! We would love to see you there, all are welcome in the garden.
Now that the season has begun, we are looking forward to seeing more faces in the garden, greater harvest success, and have a variety of fun exciting events coming up this 2016 season! Keep checking back for more garden updates.
