2016 in the Garden

As 2016 comes to a close, it’s time to look back at where we’ve been and look ahead to where we’re going next year…

The garden’s third year was a big one! In addition to another successful season with the Cultivating Roots Summer Academy, we had our first year of Preschool Roots in partnership with the YMCA and WSU Master Gardeners. Nine community organizations and eight Pacific Court residents maintained beds and grew alongside us in the garden. We partnered with the Aberdeen Timberland Library to host weekly Library in the Garden events this summer. We worked with food banks and gardeners across the county to bring fresh, locally grown produce to those in need through the Plant a Row campaign. We gathered together every week at community workdays to cultivate this space we’ve created together.

With all that we’ve accomplished, how do we continue growing next year? One of Cultivating Roots’ ongoing goals is to increase our visibility in the community. We’ll be working on more outreach to get even more people access to our outdoor community space and the fresh vegetables it provides. We’ll be working on a possible “veggie prescription” program to offer healthy food vouchers to those experiencing food insecurity. We’re looking forward to exploring new and improved ways to engage the Grays Harbor community at large.

But most importantly, we want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has supported us this year! From donors, to volunteers, to the casual blog-reader, we can’t do it without you! So happy holidays to you and yours, and here’s to another great year!
